One of the best things you can do for yourself is to set goals. When you have something to aim for, it’s easier to stay motivated and on track. Here are a few tips for setting effective goals.

Make sure your goals are realistic and achievable. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment by trying to accomplish something that’s beyond your reach.

  •  Make sure your goals are specific. Saying “I want to be more successful” is too vague, what does “more successful” mean to you? Be precise in what you want to achieve.
  •  Make sure your goals are time-bound. Giving yourself a deadline will help you stay focused and motivated.
  • Write down your goals. Take the time to put your goals in writing. This will help you stay accountable and on track with reaching your goals.
  • Read your goals regularly, either each day or each week. Having something written down will make it more likely that you remember your goals and act by them.
  • Make your goals specific and measurable so that you will know when you’ve achieved them. For example, instead of saying “I’ll exercise every day,” set the goal to complete 70 push-ups in a row or run at least four miles.
  • Keep your goals relevant so that you’ll enjoy working toward them and be more likely to take action quickly. For example, if you want to lose weight, pick health goals instead of career ones.
  • Your goals should be relevant enough that they will motivate you to take action. For example, if your goal is to learn how to code, make sure the reward of building an app is worth the effort.
  • Be sure your goals are time-bound so that you’ll know when you need to accomplish them. For example, your goal should be to lose 20 pounds within six months, not six years.
  • Set up a system of accountability so that you’ll know someone will hold you responsible if you don’t follow through on your promises. For example, commit to sharing your progress with one person in your life every week or join a class for an activity that requires lots of preparation and time.
  • Create reminders for yourself so that you won’t forget what you’re trying to accomplish, such as sticky notes on your bathroom mirror or setting an alert on your calendar. For example, when planning a vacation, add a reminder to buy tickets one month in advance instead of the night before the flight leaves.
